Nostalgia alone does not a great product make September 9, 2010 TimInChicago (Chicago, IL USA) It pains me a little to write a 3 star review for brand that I am so fond of. The truth, however, is that this is not your father's Weber grill and between packaging, prodcut marketing choices, etc, they seem to have cut some corners that, in my opintion, create a challenge to it's standing as the defacto charcoal grill of choice. It's difficult for Weber, I'm sure. Rising costs, etc naturally put presssure on the product and create a need to "innovate" and change the way the grill is made in order to stay within some price/profit margin goal they need to keep. A charcoal grill is a pretty simple product at the end of the day so.. hey, Weber... I think I get it but here are the problem...
1) the packaging does not seem to protect the finish or the finish is getting too much damage (is too weak?) before it leaves the factory.
2) the small things like a tiny white cap that goes on the non-wheel leg... come on, get some decent plastic or rubber that doesn't break the first time the grill is moved.
3) the top just does not fit on the grill as well as they used to... the fit and feel is not what it used to be on these. I don't like how precise I have to be to put the lid on so it stays.
4) the fact that the "Gold" version does not include a kettle thermometer (like they used to have in the top handle) is pretty lame. I miss that feature.
5) the fact that the "Gold" version does not have a lid holder rod that goes around half the kettle for easier storage of the lid (like it used it) is also lame and sorely missing.
The truth is that the grill works well and I still enjoy using it. But, it does not work as well as the grills they used to make and product marketing choices kind of stink. The price delta from the Gold to the dumb-looking Platinum or the huge Performer are steep. I don't need to pay $100 to $200 extra for tables I don't need just to have a few of the features that I think should be in the Gold. If money is no object to you and you have the space, buy the Performer... I'm sure it's great - and clearly Weber is trying to force your hand toward the high dollar item anyway. If you're in the price range of the Gold... I would suggest trying to find a used one or look around at other brands.
Terrific quality August 28, 2010 Joerg Eggers (Henstedt-Ulzburg) We have a similar model One Touch Premium home (Germany) and the quality of Weber pays off. I brought the old chinese bbq to trash today ;-).
The Weber is very solid build and comes ready to go with drop pans and charcoal holders (wires). Bought a chimney from Weber since the reviews were so good. Tried direct and indirect, keep on training.
Will not to back to chinese quality again.
Since we live in Northern Germany usage of this bbq is limited to summer time, completed with a Q200 grill.
Beware of the chipped Porcelain August 17, 2010 Nino 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Listen I can't attest to the greatness of this grill as all the previous reviewers have claimed, sadly because I haven't been able to get to the grilling part. My first order arrived with chipped porcelain and a squashed handle and after I called back the customer service rep was quick to offer a replacement, but alas there were none in stock... An hour later the grill reappeared I called and Bam a replacement was sent. I got the new one and De;Javu, same chip same handle, different grill. I am not the first customer to get this. So beware of the defective grills in this series. I am going to go look for one in person instead of playing Russian roulette again with Amazon, if only they can personally check them before sending...
Grilling to Perfection July 6, 2010 jhkerch (Mahomet, IL) I love my new Weber. It has a super big ash catcher basket so I don't have to empty it every time. It came with an instruction book, & recipe tips. I am so very happy with my grill!
Great Grill June 24, 2010 B. Wollmer (WI USA) I bought this as an early Father's Day gift for my husband. He is very pleased with it. He grills with natural hardwood charcoal and is especially pleased with the shut off vents that allow him to preserve his charcoal after he is done grilling. He has been able to grill 3 separate times with the same load of charcoal. I appreciated the fact that it was easy to assemble. The blue color looks really sharp.
