5 out of 5 stars Cooks to perfection   August 24, 2010

As the other user said, the bail handle is actually off balance, but just me, I can't think of any reason to want to lift a BBQ with live coals in it, really don't think its meant for that use. Mine will stay put except for cleaning at which point it will be cold anyway.
Moving on, I fired it up for the first time tonight. For me, the coals are not too far away; in low position, I cooked 2 chicken breasts to perfection, grill marks and all, probably could have used high position. I did keep the cover to my old 10 x 18 grill, it came in handy, not a 'perfect' fit, but just plop it on top, good enough. As the coals died down, I took the chicken off, wrapped baby potatoes and broccoli in foil with a little butter and water, 10 min. ea side, with the cover, roasted to perfection. As they died down further, a couple of figs off my tree, rubbed in a little butter, then grilled, drizzled with some organic maple syrup and cinnamon, there's dessert, perfect again; where's the ice cream!
I love the little door in front, you can manipulate the coals to your liking, or simply watch them like a little fireplace which I did as it got dark and the figs were roasting. A good evening for me, this little BBQ, gets nice and hot, grills and roasts (with makeshift lid), cooks evenly, easy to use, and fun to watch. It left me feeling like it doesn't get better.

5 out of 5 stars King of the hibachis!   May 12, 2010

I just adore this hibachi. It's a Lodge, so you can depend on the quality. It's pre-seasoned which is such a plus when selecting cast iron. You can control the heat and proximity to the fire. I have never cooked anything on it that didn't come out perfectly, and I'm no pro.

5 out of 5 stars Hot and Easy   April 26, 2010

This product is just what you want in a hibachi...it's easy to start and it gets really hot, really fast. The preseasoned griddle can cook on two different levels and the heat can be adjusted by way of a damper. We bought ours primarily to sear steaks quickly leaving them medium rare to rare. If that's what you want then that's what you get. It's heavy duty cast iron throughout with obvious attention to detail and I'm sure this cooker will still be going when my warranty expires. I suggest using natural lump type charcoal, not briquets, and a stack starter.

3 out of 5 stars Serious Safety Issue   April 22, 2010

The Sportsman Grill is a nice tool for a quick meal. However if you wish to sear your food you need tons of charcoal as the cooking surface is too far from the heat. Thus you must pile your fuel almost up to the rim. Do not try to move your grill the bail handle is so off balance the fire door flips open and lit coals fall first on you then on the deck.
There should have been a warning in the box at minimum.
